"@shyun.sumibiyaki – Japanese Charcoal BBQ Feast in Melbourne! If you’re after an authentic Japanese BBQ experience, Shyun Sumibiyaki is a must-visit. Located in Carnegie, it’s the sister restaurant to the much-loved Shyun Sushi, but here, the focus is all about premium meats, smoky charcoal grills, and the joy of slow dining. We decided to go all in and order the Sumibiyaki Banquet Set, and it was an absolute feast from start to finish. The Banquet Experience Wagyu Tataki The meal kicked off with wagyu tataki – The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with a delicate smokiness balanced by refreshing acidity. A perfect start. BBQ Meat Cuts You get an indulgent spread of premium beef cuts: A5 Wagyu Strip Loin – buttery, marbled perfection that literally melts in your mouth when grilled over the charcoal. Cube Roll – rich and juicy with just the right amount of bite. Short Rib – tender with a deep beefy flavour, perfect for pairing with their dipping sauces. Flap Meat – slightly chewier, but packed with robust, smoky notes when charred. Flank Steak – leaner but still full of flavour The beauty of sumibiyaki is that you cook everything yourself over the grill at your table, so every bite is hot, smoky, and to your liking. Robata Skewers (5 Selections) The banquet also comes with a rotating selection of 5 robata skewers. Expect a mix of juicy chicken, pork, and beef, all smoky, slightly caramelised, and addictive. For around the price of a mid-tier Melbourne dinner, you’re getting premium Japanese wagyu and a full banquet experience that feels genuinely special. It's definitely one of the best Japanese BBQ spots in Melbourne. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A feast worth every bite."

"Food is always so delicious! The meat is high quality and the marinades make them even tastier. The sides are just as good. I cannot fault this place. Service is so welcoming - especially the lady who showed me my table and went out of her way to detail the sections of the menu on my most recent visit. Love Shyun. Will definitely come back again! I recommend this restaurant (and its other two) to anyone looking for incredible meals and experiences."

"High quality Japanese wagyu without breaking the bank. The quality of the wagyu is on a par with some decent restaurants in Japan. Charcoal grill gives the wagyu extra favor and brings it to next level. Can’t wait to come back again"

"I was craving Japanese food today and Shyun Sumibiyaki really hit the spot. The menu has such a great variety—barbecue, yakitori, ready-to-eat rice dishes, noodles, you name it. Everything we tried was high quality and delicious, with excellent service to match. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu!"

"Amazingly good and authentic Japanese food. The robabta were delicious, the meat were glistening and appealing, the grilled meat on charcoal were succulent and juicy, the fried lotus slices were crispy, the takoyaki was soft and the octopus filling was delicious. It was a memorable experience. We had a good time."

"Newly opened and already showing a lot of promise, Shyun Shimbiyaki is a unique Japanese BBQ spot in Carnegie that looks to specialise in ox tongue — something you don’t often see front and centre. We went with the banquet option, which was a great way to try a bit of everything. The skewers had a good variety, though I found the chicken a little dry. The Renekton chips were a standout — super crunchy and well-seasoned. They also serve a light brothy soup that was unexpectedly comforting, especially on a cold night. The meat set was good quality — fresh and well-marinated — though our grill felt a bit slow to heat up so things took longer to cook. Still, once it got going, everything was delicious. The ox tongue (both thin and thick cuts) was definitely the talking point of the night. While I haven’t fully warmed up to the thick-cut version, the rest of the table really enjoyed it. It’s definitely an acquired texture, but worth trying if you’re into trying new things. One small note: the sauces on the table ran out quickly, but the service made up for it. Our waiter was super attentive and went out of his way to check in on us, help with orders, and explain the dishes. A few rough edges as expected from a new spot, but overall, this was a great experience and a solid addition to the Carnegie food scene. Would happily come back to explore the menu more."
